Mayans Had Influences from the Olmec

The earlier civilization of the Olmec people gave the Mayan plenty of inspiration and techniques for their own building projects. The archaeological dig sites of San Lorenzo and La Venta cities showed detailed stone fitting, the neat building of doorways and windows, and pits or ball courts dug out of the ground before being surrounded by walls.

In fact, a lot of the information about the earlier Olmec civilization came from studying its influence on the Aztec and Maya who came after them. Although most of the Olmec city details have degraded extensively due to erosion and regrowth of the jungle, the shapes and alignment of the buildings had an influence on how the Mayan architectural masterpieces were constructed.
